While there is no blanket federal law requiring all truck drivers to get a sleep test, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) grants medical examiners the discretion to mandate one during DOT physicals.
- Truck & Bus Drivers: If a driver has a BMI over 35 (at some companies) or 40 (standard trigger), a large neck circumference (17+ inches for men, 15.5+ for women), or high blood pressure, they are often required to take a sleep test to maintain their CDL.
- Treatment Compliance: Once diagnosed, drivers must provide data from their CPAP machines (usually showing 70% usage) to keep their medical certification.
