Pilots & Air Traffic Controllers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has some of the strictest requirements. Sleep apnea is considered a disqualifying condition unless it is effectively treated and documented.

  • Pilots: Commercial and private pilots must undergo medical exams where examiners screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A test is typically required if the pilot has a BMI of 40 or higher, or if they show symptoms like loud snoring or gasping.
  • Air Traffic Controllers: They are subject to similar FAA safety standards to ensure they maintain the constant vigilance required for the job.
